Generic drugs are not all created equally!
53
I am a pharmacist with over thirty years of experience in observing and evaluating the use of generic drugs.
I have found that many generically manufactured drugs are literally just the same; as a matter of fact, many are being made by the original drug manufacturers in order to extend the income they are able to produce from their original patent.
I discovered they were being made in the same place when I compared the zip codes listed for the manufacturer on various medicine labels.
Generic drug manufacturers are like people; some are excellent, many are good and some are downright lousy.
Drug recalls are common in the industry. Most of them are self-reported. They are usually unearthed by the manufacturers own quality control procedures. Sadly, some drug recalls are a result of investigations that stem from large numbers of therapy failures or serious side effects.
There are drug manufacturers who have bad track records. They experience more than the usual number of recalls and usually for more serious reasons, such as lack of batch consistency or containing substandard ingredients that may degrade the active ingredient, causing it not to be effective for as long as it is supposed to be, etc.
Pharmacy owners normally read the current literature and are aware of who the bad players are. A conscientious pharmacist will not order from the drug makers with bad reputations. The problem is that there are some organizations where a conscientious pharmacist is not actually involved in the ordering process. All they care about is price.

Extremely interesting.
Here in Ireland, the government offers 'big' incentives to GPs to prescribe generic drugs for medical card holders(low income)-I know a couple of doctors who opted out of the medical card scheme,on a point of principle, because they felt many of the drugs were inferior to the brand named ones
It's a curious business!
Very interesting hub. It seems like I have had generic medications that didn't seem to be as effective as the samples from the doctor's office. As a consumer we really have to trust the pharmacist and doctors with regards to medication and the other problem is the generic drugs are so much cheaper you don't really want to buy name brands. Excellent hub.

I've long felt that there could be a QC and vendor difference in drug manufacturing that could make a difference. Thanks for the helpful article on generics.
