Rebuilding the Parthenon in Athens
67When we visited the Parthenon shortly before the 2004 Olympics we discovered that there was a lot of work going on behind the scenes to restore the structure.
Check out Frommer's Travel Guides for a lot of good local travel information:

A few of the supporting pillars have been put back in place after painstaking restoration and refitting.
16 Years Later in 2002
If you look closely at the picture behind us you will see a lot of construction equipment and scaffolding.
Every piece that can be has been taken down, catalogued, cleaned, restored and is waiting to be put back into it's rightful place. For over 2000 years this incredible and beautiful building has epitomized the blending of engineering genius and beauty.
This project has gone on for years. No one knows how long it will take to finish the job.
I am including a couple of videos that show some of the reconstruction and some of the visual tricks that the builders played on us.

Epilogue
I hope to see you at the Parthenon when it has been completely restored to its original beauty and majesty.

I am a soldier in the us army and of greek decent I hope to one day see my home land and visit the site after completion
This is really good news for us.Parthenon is a great temple we preserve the old statue .and videos are amazing
Glad that you shared that with us - the Greeks have really kicked on, since the Olympics, and are working hard to repair and restore. I have not had chance to visit the new museum, but my friend said that it is truly awesome.
All it needs now is the Elgin Marbles.... :D
Wonderful Photographs!! When we visited the Parthenon in 2000 they had just begun some of the restoration. You may view photos of Greece as well as many other European and South American countries on our website if you so desire. All under the "Travel" category. Many blessings! ~K

The restoration work that is going on at the Acropolis is amazing. My family lived in Greece, 1964-1967, and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sight was the Parthenon all golden and shimmering, lit up after dark.
I really like your Hub and the fact that you drew attention to the restoration of what is surely one of the wonders of the world. I talk a little bit about Greece in my Hub "A Polish-American Artist."
